What notification channels are in Android

A notification channel is a category of messages inside one app. Since Android 8 every notification must belong to a channel, and a channel has its own settings: sound, vibration, importance, lock screen behaviour.
Channels exist so you can turn off one kind of message rather than the whole app: a messenger separates direct messages from group chats, a shop separates order status from discounts.
An app sets a channel’s importance once, when creating it, and can only lower it afterwards. Only a person can raise it again in settings.
Why it matters
A medium-importance channel arrives silently: the notification is in the shade, the sound is not. An app cannot raise its own importance, only you can, so if you once turned it down this is the only place to put it back.
Where it is in settings
- Any phone
- Settings → Apps → your app → Notifications → the reminders channel. Set it to urgent, or turn on pop-ups together with sound.
