Comparison

KIPRI or Microsoft To Do

Microsoft To Do stores tasks on Exchange servers and shows them in Outlook. KIPRI is an Android app for reminders, birthdays and habits. They overlap in tasks and reminders, and beyond that each does its own thing.

This comparison was written by the KIPRI developers. We tried to be fair: everything about the other app comes from its own help pages, and what it does better is listed separately.

KIPRI suits you if

  • habits need streaks, a counter and a skipped day that does not break the streak, not a task that repeats daily
  • birthdays with several early alerts matter
  • you want to dictate reminders in Russian on Android

Microsoft To Do suits you if

  • your mail is in Outlook: a flagged email becomes a task
  • you need tasks on Windows, Mac, iPhone and in the browser
  • the list is shared with family or colleagues, with tasks assigned to people

To Do is Outlook Tasks

According to Microsoft’s help, all To Do tasks are stored on Exchange Online servers and appear in Outlook Tasks automatically. A flagged email becomes a task: the name comes from the subject, and the task opens the original email. This works only for mailboxes hosted by Microsoft (Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com or a custom domain on them), and when you turn the list on it fills with the 100 most recently flagged emails from the last 30 days.

The link is not complete. To Do does not show start and end dates, task status, completion percentage or multiple priority levels from Outlook Tasks. KIPRI has no connection to mail at all.

Habits: a repeating task or a tracker

For habits the To Do help suggests setting a task to repeat every day: each morning the app will suggest adding it to My Day. That article says nothing about streaks or counters.

In KIPRI a habit is a record of its own: a daily goal, a schedule of every day, chosen days or N times a week, up to eight reminders a day, a streak, and a skipped day that does not break it.

What To Do does better

Apps for Android, iOS, Windows and Mac plus a web version, all in sync: the help says To Do updates every 5 seconds. Lists shared by invitation link with tasks assigned to members. An Android widget. Repeats with a custom rule.

KIPRI has an Android app only, no shared lists and no widgets, and its repeats have no «every N».

Russian and reminders on Android

To Do recognizes dates typed in a task title in the Windows app, English only there, and in the iOS app. For other platforms the help says support is being expanded. In KIPRI a reminder is dictated or typed in Russian: «завтра в 9 утра», «каждый месяц».

Delivery depends on the same thing for both. The To Do help warns that reminders on Android depend on system settings and some may be suppressed by the system, and it lists steps by phone brand. The same applies to KIPRI.

What people usually ask

  • Does Microsoft To Do have a habit tracker?

The help has no separate section for habits. Microsoft suggests setting a task to repeat daily, and then each morning it is suggested for My Day.

  • Does Microsoft To Do understand dates written in words?

According to the help, in the Windows app, English only there, and in the iOS app. Android is not on that list.
